Whisper No Lies
Hell. He didn’t know. One minute he’d been lying there, pissed at the world in general
and her in particular and the next he’d been inside her. Ramming into her, slamming her up against the shower wall with all the finesse of a wounded bull. Needing her goodness and her life to remind him there was more than what he’d seen, more, even, than what he’d done in his life in the name of right that sometimes came from wrong.
She stirred slightly. Yawned. Her warm breath fanned his naked chest. “Did we just
kiss and make up?”
He stroked his hand over her bare back. Silk. Her skin felt like silk. “Is that what you call it? Kissing?”
She lifted her head, crossed her arms on top of his chest, and rested her chin there. Her green eyes were all soft and sleepy when they met his. “Hi.”
He grinned, though Lord only knew why. Because she made him want to, he guessed.
“Hi.”
She was quiet for a moment, her expression turning thoughtful. “Do you suppose
they’re at the embassy yet?”
He craned his head around to see the nightstand, snagged his watch, and checked the
time. “If not, they will be soon.”
She uncurled a forefinger, touched it to his chin.
“They’ll be okay,” he assured her because she looked so sad.
She tried for a smile but didn’t quite manage it. “I’m not a mother but I think I might
know how a mom feels when faced with leaving her daughter behind.”
It didn’t matter that Crystal barely knew Dina or Mary. Johnny had watched as a bond
had been forged between them. It was the one good thing that may have come out of their
horrible experience.
“You’re sure they’re going to get out of here okay?”
“I’m sure.” He lifted her hand, studied the inside of her wrist. Although it was red and raw and scabbed over, he was relieved to see that the brand showed no signs of infection. It pissed him off all over again that Yao had branded her. “Dina will be on a flight home before the day is over. Hopefully, the British authorities will react as efficiently for Mary’s sake.”
Again she was quiet before lowering her head and laying her cheek back down on his
chest. “How does this happen? How, in this age, can human rights be so blatantly violated? I don’t understand. I’ll never understand.”
Johnny touched a hand to her hair. Breathed deep. No. She didn’t understand. He hoped
to hell she never would. Hoped she would never find out about the things he’d seen, the things he’d had to do in the name of human rights—hell, in the name of right. And he prayed to God she would never know the worst of man’s cruelty to man.
“It’s going to be okay,” he promised.
But she was already asleep.
“It’s going to be okay,” he whispered again, vowing then and there that when this was
over he’d figure out a way to show her the best of him so she could forget about the worst of this.
Only one problem—he had to figure out what his best was.
